I am using a NI S61 controller via USB and a Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 2nd Gen, with the MIDI Out going to the MIDI In of the SC-880.This article relies largely or entirely on a single source. So it will always revert to the Standard Kit when the project is reopened. The issue here is that it will not remember the chosen kit sound, as obviously no MIDI command is being sent from Cubase to recall it. Then, I can manually change the drumkit on the Roland by putting it in "Rhythm Mode" and then scrolling to my preferred kit using the front panel. When starting a new MIDI track and opening the Drum Editior in Cubase, the Roland recognises this and will automatically switch to the Standard Kit sound. However one thing I'm struggling with is drums, which do not appear in the list of Progams for a given MIDI track. The External Instrument is assigned to the "SC-88" MIDI Device in the list of devices in Cubase and appears display all the instrument programs and operate smoothly. I purchased a secondhand Roland SC-880 rack sound module recently and have it set up smoothly with Cubase 10.5 (Windows) as an External Instrument.
